DescriptionRectangular wholecloth bed quilt made of rust-red wool. The quilt is stitched in a pattern of 6 1/4" squares with alternating designs of a flower composed of four hearts set in a cross and a fylfot (curved swastika). The quilt is bordered on three sides with a wide border of large and small leaves and interlocking circles forming flowers. There are four initials at the center top that may be “NHVH.” The quilting is worked in running stitches. The quilt is backed in yellow wool, with two large patches—probably 20th-century repairs. The quilt has cotton batting.
Label TextAmericans made wholecloth quilts using imported glazed worsted textiles, the latter given their sheen under heat and pressure applied by presses. At the same time, professionally made quilts were being imported by British merchants. It is not known whether this was made in America or imported.
