Label TextKing William III and his wife, Queen Mary II, served as co-monarchs when they came to the throne in 1688, a moment known as the Glorious Revolution. They reunited Britain after a tumultuous period. The College of William and Mary was named for the monarchs who issued the charter that established the school in 1693.
Half-length portrait facing right. He is dressed in armor with a cloak over it. The frame is highly decorated with roses, thistles, lilies, acorns, and oranges. There are shields in the four corners representing France, Ireland, England, and Scotland.
