DescriptionThis is a small purse or pocket decorated in silk embroidery threads and glass beads.
Label TextThis small, beaded purse held a commendation presented to Lucy Gray Waring, student number 516 at the Tappahannock Female Seminary. Lucy was the granddaughter of Mrs. Lucy Wellford Gray, the instructress, and was probably named in honor of the esteemed matriarch. The relationship between Lucy and Martha Waring (whose sampler is in the CWF collection) has not been determined. Born in 1830, Lucy Gray Waring died in 1841, shortly after receiving her certificate from her grandmother for good behavior.
