Label TextWhile much is yet to be discovered about colonial America, no evidence to suggests that elephants trumpeted their way through the forests of the South in the 17th century. Modern collectors and numismatic researchers are baffled at the choice of an African elephant to grace the obverse of this enigmatic Carolina token of c.1694.With the reverse legend "GOD PRESERVE CAROLINA: AND THE LORDS PROPRIETORS," it is believed that this token was intended to stimulate interest in either investing in the Carolina venture or settling in the fledgling colony. A similar token emblazoned with the same good wishes for New England was also struck.
