DescriptionA scene outside a tavern bearing the sign of a blue bell. In a cart drawn by two horses hitched tandem, there are two women and a man. Straw, etc. protrudes from the rear of the cart. A woman standing on the ground beside the cart holds a pitcher in her near hand and, with her other hand, proffers a glass to the younger of the two women in the cart. A man with a long whip stands behind her, in front of a tacked, white horse. A family of pigs forages in the left foreground. To the right in the picture, part of the tavern (a wood-framed structure) is visible. Three men stand in the portico. A boy watches them from beside a trough, where he waters his pony (or donkey?), and a dog watches. A tree towers over all from the left, with a vague structure visible in the center middle ground.
MarkingsOn the back of the frame is a printed label reading "PEMBROKE ANTIQUES/18th Century Furniture and Accessories/WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA". Beneath the printed portion, handwritten in ink, is "PP 1045/2500." A second label, partly printed and partly handwritten reads: "LOCKSON SERVICES LTD/PA 5449". In script in pencil on the back of the canvas is "after Morland".
ProvenanceTransferred to CWF collections from the Craft House/Inn. Label on back indicates prior ownership Pembroke Antiques. No further history known.
