DescriptionOvoid salt-glazed stoneware pitcher with a tall collar and pouring lip. There is an incised line around the vessel about half way down the collar and two flattened encircling cordons at the transition point between the collar and the body. Brushed cobalt decoration in a foliate pattern is repeated around the rim and there are two tall stemmed flowers brushed onto the front of the piece (180 degrees from the handle). An extruded handle is attached with thumb impressions and each juncture is encircled with cobalt.ProvenanceUsed by Elizabeth Clifford Morris Canby (1813-1892) first at "Woodside Farm" near Wilmington, Delaware and, after 1868, at "Brandywine", the Canby home at 14th and Market streets in Wilmington. Descended in the family to Beatrix Rumford who gifted it to Colonial Williamsburg.
