DescriptionBritish Pattern 1768 bayonet of the standard form.Label TextTo accompany their new, shorter Land Pattern muskets, the Board of Ordnance ordered a new pattern of socket bayonet with a narrower blade. This wartime-produced example bears the mark of Thomas Hadley, a prolific contractor based Britain’s industrial Midlands.

MarkingsBase of blade marked "HADLEY," along with a "Crown 4" and another circular mark.
ProvenancePart of the issue of arms to the Westmoreland Militia during the last two decades of the 18th. century. From the collection at Lowther Castle, via W. Keith Neal. Likely once part of an arms display installed by James Lowther, 1st. Earl of Lonsdale (1736-1802), who served as the Colonel of the Westmoreland Militia.
