Label TextWhile the practice of gifting medals to Native Americans is well documented during the latter part of the colonial period, not all of them were so-called Indian Peace medals. When Cunne Shote, a Cherokee Chief, visited London in 1762, he was painted by Francis Parsons. Below the collar of his shirt hung two medals; a copper one and a silver example of this very medal. Both were presented to Cunne Shote during his visit to England, and were worn back in American after his return.

For a mezzotint after Parsons' portrait of Cunne Shote, see 2002-10.
