DescriptionApperance:
Side chair with double arched carved crest rail with scrolled ears; pierced and carved splat; molded shoe; compass seat with upholstered slipseat; shaped returns under the seat rail at the rear legs; front cabriole legs with C scrolls and shells carved on the knees and open talon ball and claw feet; rear rounded stump legs.

Construction:
Seat rails are tenoned into tops of front legs and into rear legs; original quarter round glue blocks are in the corners of the seat; a separate shoe is nailed to the top of the rear seat rail and overhangs the same; the front edges of the shoe are supported by vertical blocks glued to the front of the rear seat rail at the ends; side brackets glued to the underside of the side seat rails and to the rear legs; front knee brackets are nailed under the seat rails and glued to those and the legs; stiles are tenoned into the crest rail; splat is tenoned into the crest rail and shoe; slipseat has half lapped construction reinforced with nails.
Markings"IIII" chiseled into front of rear seat rail.
ProvenancePurchased by donor from the Bailey estate in Norfolk on the Hague in 1946/47.
