Label TextThis medal has the distinction of being the first medal commemorating George Washington to be struck in America. Designed by Samuel Brooks, a Philadelphia goldsmith and seal cutter, it was issued and sold by Jacques Manly in 1790. At the time, medals in white metal sold for $1, those in silver for $4, and brass or bronze versions (like this one) cost $2.
It is thought that Joseph Wright's beautiful portrait of Washington (executed c. 1784 and published in 1790) served as the inspiration for this rather unflattering portrait of the President.
