Label TextThis map was included in Thomas Campanius Holm's book "Kort Beskrifning om Provincien Nya Swerige uti America, Som nu fortjden af the Engelske" ["Brief description of the province of New Swerige in America: as now, the English is called Pensylvania...] (Stockholm: Wankijfs Änkia, 1702). Thomas, who never travelled to North America, compiled manuscript documents written by his grandfather John Campanius (1601-1683) who was a Swedish Lutheran priest who served as a missionary in New Sweden. Upon his arrival in Fort Christiana, near Wilmington, Delaware in 1643, he focused his efforts on evangelizing the Lenape people. He recorded and observed their culture and behavior and learned their language. Campanius also transliterated the Lord's Prayer to substitute "daily bread" for American essentials like venison and corn. He also translated Luther's Small Catechism into the Delaware language, making him one of the first Europeans to American indigenous language.
