Label TextJames Forbes was an English writer and author who first travelled to India in 1765 as the writer for the British East India Company. During his tenure there from 1765-1784, Forbes wrote prolific notes and made thousands of drawings chronicling Indian culture, flora, fauna, customs, and architecture. In 1813, he published four volumes on his experiences and drawings entitled, “Oriental Memories: selected and abridged from a series of familiar letters written during seventeen years residence in India: including observations on parts of Africa and South America, and a narrative of occurrences in four India voyage, Volume 1, (Printed for the Author by T. Bensley, Bolt Court; Published by White, Cochrane, and Co. Horace's Head, Fleet-Street, 1813). This print comes from the first volume of that work. It is also a rare early example of lithography.
