DescriptionA neck stock made of linen, cotton, and silk. The body of the stock is made of 5 layers of stiff linen buckrum that were running stitched (possibly pad stitched) together vertically with heavy linen threads. The exterior was created by pleating black silk and stitching it to the linen buckrum. The edges of the stock and ends are bound in black cotton velvet. The tabs for the fastener and the buckle are made of a printed cotton, covered in a black cotton, which is mostly worn away. The back side of the stock is fully lined with a brown or sepia printed cotton.InscribedNote sewn to the back of the neck stock reads:
"Stock made to be owrn around the neck. Made by Dolly (Dole) Woodward of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, and prestned to her nephew Nathan D. Pingree of New London, N.H. in the summer of 1839."
ProvenanceDollie’s parents were Nathan and Pheobe Dole. She was one of eight daughters. Dollie married James Woodward on December 8th, 1814 and by 1839 they moved to Mechanicsville, Ohio. Dollie's younger sister, Sarah “Sally” Dole married Jeremiah Pingree on December 30th, 1813. Their son is Nathan Dole Pingree, owner of the stock.
