DescriptionA coral silk bag with a drawstring top, decorated on either side with an oval silk pad with crocheted silver wire and multicolored silks. Attached at the top of the bag is a cord of silk and silver wire. On the sides of the bag, decorative pieces of crocheted silk and metallic threads are attached. These possibly display floral motifs in pink, blue, and yellow. Two loops of metallic and silk thread are included at the opening of the bag. It may have served as a sachet, containing herbs, or as a coin purse.
ProvenanceAppears to be the identical piece from the Collection of Percival Griffiths illustrated in Seligman & Hughes, DOMESTIC NEEDLEWORK, Pl. 54E, and dated 1650-1670.
