DescriptionTin-glazed earthenware (maiolica) dish. Thrown dish with wire-trimmed foot, shallow cavetto and slightly rolled rim turned under. Front of dish painted with central theatrical figure of a mounted musketeer holding a lance and riding a horse amidst a stylized landscape and background of vibrant yellow and blue horizontal color bands. The reverse decorated with three concentric circles painted in blue.Label TextSituated in the mountains on the outskirts of Florence, Italy, Montelupo became a major center of ceramic production in the 17th century. Fragments of similarly decorated dishes have been recovered archaeologically at Jamestown, Virginia and just outside of Jamestown at the site of Reverend Richard Buck who served as minister to the colony of Virginia from 1610-1624.
