Label TextThe Model 1774 infantry musket was the most current pattern sent by France for the use of the American forces during the Revolution. Since the French were ever-progressive in their arms designs, the end of this pattern's stock held a tiny spring which clipped onto the tapered ring at the rear of its specially designed bayonet. This attempt at a simple way to secure the bayonet on the musket failed, and it was quickly superseded. Americans who received these muskets during the war often removed and discarded this pesky little piece, but happily kept their Model 1774 bayonets. Only made for two or three years, they are rare today.
