DescriptionDouble-handled vase: square plinth rises to circular stepped trumpet-shaped foot with spool juncture that supports a baluster vase. A threaded metal rod with washers and a wingnut joins the stem and foot with the vase container. Two elongated ear-shaped handles with roundels at the upper terminals applied vertically to opposite sides of the vessel. Gilding or traces of gilding on the plinth, foot, trunk, trumpet-shaped upper portion of the vase, the top rim, and the handles. The body of the vase painted in the round with two connected scenes: one side with an Italianate-style building perched on a bluff overlooking a body of water, two small figures in the foreground on a grassy and dirt path amidst trees and shrubs; the other side with three women in pinkish-purple, blue, and yellow gowns respectively, beneath an arbor, the woman in the pinkish-purple gown wearing a plumed hat and holding a parasol, the woman in blue standing with her back to the viewer, facing the woman in purple and waving a pink shawl, and the woman in yellow seated wearing a plumed hat and holding a folded fan in her lap.
ProvenanceAccording to family tradition, originally purchased by Richard Jennings Tucker and his wife of New York and Bermuda or Robert and Sara Tucker. Descended to Catharine Fitch Tucker [February 28, 1879-August 22, 1970] who gifted the piece to her neice, Joan Leonora Tucker Fowle [October 19, 1929-January 26, 2023], then it descended to Wendy Susan Tucker.
