DescriptionThis Chinese export porcelain plate is decorated in the "Imari" style, painted in underglaze blue, iron red overglaze and gilding. A Mandarin duck in iron red and gold stands amid lotus plants in water while another is pictured overhead. In the foreground, a tall pierced rock with large peony plant is enclosed by a lattice fence. The cavetto is banded in cell-diaper with reserves of peony blossoms and the Marley features large, trailing peony sprigs. The rim is edged in sepia and the base is insetA 3/8" chip to rim and various small nicks. A 1/8" glaze chip or hole near the well center appears to have been worn or ground all around its edges, possibly intentionally. Some wear to gilding and plate is somewhat curved/warped.
Label TextChinese porcelain decorated in blue, red, and gold was very popular in colonial America. This palette was first developed in Japan and later copied on Chinese wares sent to the West. The colors are known today as Imari, after the Japanese port through which the originals were shipped.
