DescriptionPlate with narrow rim and no foot ring. Bluish tin glaze decoration in blue, manganese, mixed green, and red with a leaping fish, tail in the air, spouting water; two stylized boats on either side. Chinese scrolls and cross and four-dots motif on the rim.Label TextThe spouting whale design seen on this plate, perhaps influenced by a crest or produced for a tavern of that name, was made by artisans in both London and Bristol. The Bristol examples look more like fish, whereas the London whales often resemble the dolphins seen in period architectural ornaments.
The London attribution of this plate is based on its shape.
