DescriptionSilver-chalice form cup with deep bowl and slightly flared rim. White tin glaze decorated in blue and touches of yellow on the body with the arms of the London Company of Coopers and the inscription "HE THAT HATH THIS CUP IN HAND DRINKE / UP THE BEERE LET IT NOT STAND 1656" On the foot, the initials "GE."Label TextThe arms of the London Coopers' Company, which date back to 1501, are not easily read on this piece. The three objects across the top are lilies representing the Virgin Mary, the Coopers' patron saint. Above and below the chevron are barrel hoops and within the chevron are two broadaxes and a royne, a cooper's grooping tool.
In addition to the arms, the goblet bears the inscription "HE THAT HATH THIS CUP IN HAND DRINKE / UP THE BEERE LET IT NOT STAND 1656."
The London attribution for the vessel is based on the glaze, the form, and the arms of a London company.
