DescriptionSilver-chalice form cup with deep bowl and slightly flared rim. White tin glaze decorated in blue with pipe-smoker cartouche containing the inscription "MARY BVTLER 1655"Label TextVessels of this period sometimes feature women's names instead of men's or those of couples. This example bears the name "MARY BVTLER" and the date 1655.
The goblet or standing-cup, a vessel intended for drinking spirits, is far less common than the traditional mug. The foot of this example is a replacement. The pipesmoker masks on the ends of the cartouche, rare on domestic vessels, are more common on drug jars of the period. Lipski and Archer record eleven dated vessels with this motif ranging from 1634 to 1665.
The London attribution is based on the glaze and the decoration.
