DescriptionCase cover for side chair made of red on white pastoral copperplate-printed cotton-and-linen. The case cover has gathered flounce edged with cotton-and-wool fringe. The portion of the design visible includes a peacock and chickens, part of a larger design featuring shepherd playing flute, woman spinning, and farm animals among ruins, signed and dated by R. Jones of Old Ford, England, 1761.
Label TextCopperplate-printed cottons with large-scale pictorial designs were popular choices for furniture covers. Printer Robert Jones at the Old Ford factory, London, combined a number of design sources, some from as early as the mid-seventeenth century, for his large-scale design, which he proudly signed and dated in the printing, “R? Iones, 1761.”

This case cover was once part of a set of textiles for a bed chamber that originally included several ruffled covers for side chairs, a cover for an easy chair, and a set of bed hangings.
