DescriptionSauceboat shaped with projecting lip spout, shaped edge, and double C-scroll handle; molded in high relief with swags of flowers and fruit; shaped pedestal base molded with strap-work and human and goat heads; painted on exterior with scattered flying and crawling insects and a large brown and green snail; interior painted in pinks and greens with spray of chrysanthemums and a few small flower heads and insects; handle painted with line of small flowers and, like lip and edges of base, lined in brown. Incised triangle under glaze on base.Label TextThe previous training and experience as a silversmith of Chelsea manager Nicholas Sprimont can be seen in this sauceboat. Sprimont modeled it from a London silver sauceboat bearing the date letter for 1745-1746. Several other Chelsea examples appear in major collections, including a pair at the Victoria and Albert Museum bearing enamel decoration akin to that seen here.
