DescriptionMug of warm white body and blue-gray glaze with puddling to the underside. Of vasiform/baluster form with slightly flaring lip surmounting vertical foot ring with extruded, molded handle in a slightly angular shape. With blue scale ground; leaving the two large reserves in the so-called "Rococo mirror" shape and smaller reserves on the handle and the lip area opposite the handle. The small reserves on the handle with gilt bellflowers and drops and borders forming an elaborate cartouche; the terminal of the handle marked with a gilt spray of acorns and oak leaves. The smaller cartouches opposite the handle with differing insects painted in polychrome. The large reserves with elaborate gilt borders comprising shells, scrolls, ogee scrolls, and flourishes. The one reserve painted with a large bird in rust, magenta, and yellow with black and pink dots crouching before a tree. The tree of spindly form with green foliage and red berries, with smaller bird in coloring similar to the larger bird (but in stripes rather than dots). Another, diminutive bird in shades of magenta flying toward foliage of tree. The other reserve with a large pink and yellow bird with rust-colored spots on tail standing before a small tree or foliage spray. Another, smaller bird in red, yellow, and magenta perched in foliage. The painting well and realistically done, possibly by the James Giles or equivalent workshop.
