DescriptionRectangular brown leather portfolio-shaped bag or dispatch case with shaped flap and engraved brass clasp. Hand stitched. The clasp is engraved with the words, "Oakam/ J. Roche/ Clungunford House."
Label TextThis functional leather bag was used to carry mail for Clungunford House, the name engraved on the clasp. Located near Shrewsbury, Clungunford House (pronounced "Clungerford") was the seat of the Rocke family.

ProvenanceClungunford House (pronounced "Clungerford") is a house located near Shrewsbury, England, and was the seat of the Rocke family. There was also a town named Clungunford. Several John Rocke's lived there or nearby in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
