DescriptionSide chair with serpentine crest rail with central pierced circle; pierced, interlaced splat; straight seat rails with molded upper edge; slip seat original to both chairs; straight front legs, square in cross-section and with molded outer edge and chamfered inner edge; back legs square in cross-section and flare to rear; side, rear, and medial stretchers rectangular in cross section; note: side rails of seat are not morticed through back legs.Markings.1 marked "IIII" on seat frame at back and "V" on slip seat.

ProvenanceThis chair, and its mate 1967-60,2, have a history of ownership by Mordecai Gist (1743-1792), Captain and later Brigadier General of Maryland line in the American Revolution. Gist was a resident of Baltimore before the Revolution and South Carolina after. Chairs 1967-60, 1 are part of the original set formed by 1953-567, 1-6. They were acquired from the same family, have an identical finish, and the numbers on the chairs are not duplicated.
