Label TextThe earliest sugar tongs are of fire-tong form, either of spring type, as here, or with pivoting arms, as in an actual pair of fire tongs. This handsome example, with well articulated handle and moldings, can be dated shortly after the reintroduction of the sterling standard in 1719, in which year Arnett and Pocock entered their mark. Sir Ambrose Heal (The London Goldsmiths, 1200-1800 [Cambridge: University Press, 1935], p. 97) records their partnership as active between 1719 and 1724.
