DescriptionPlate with broadly scalloped rim and incised foot ring. Bluish tin glaze decorated in blue: on the front, a central Chinese landscape scene including pagodas, a human figure, and Ming birds; on the rim, a band of trellis diaper interrupted at the base of each scallop by two alternating flower motifs; on the back, a band of alternating circles and double slash marks.Label TextAn octagonal plate dated 1737 and a circular plate dated 1738 (both privately owned) bear the same design seen here. Fragments of plates with this pattern have been excavated on sites in the three major potting areas in England-Bristol (at Limekiln Lane), London (at Vauxhall), and Liverpool--as well as at several sites in Williamsburg, including the Lightfoot House (3AA.OO24).2
