DescriptionWhole-cloth quilt of printed cottons. One side, probably the front, consists of an overall small-scale floral-and-leaf design in white, madder red and pinks with blue accents on a madder red ground. The other side consists of two different chintz textiles. One is a medium-scale Indian mordant-painted-and-dyed textile with attenuated exotic plant forms with tightly curled leaves in C-scrolls; some leaves have serrated edges. The textile can be related to "bizarre" silks from the early eighteenth century. The second textile is Indian mordant-painted-and-dyed chintz in a smaller scrolling floral design with a regular repeat. Quilting pattern consists of diamond quilting in the center field with corner spandrels filled with a rosette framed with a guilloche. Inner border of repeating large flower forms in lozenges with an open-face flower in the corners. Woolen batting or filling.
ProvenanceAcquired from Cora Ginsburg, Inc., in 1973.
