DescriptionThis is a double-woven coverlet of dark blue wool and natural color cotton in a "pine tree and snow ball" pattern. It was woven in two loom widths and center seamed. The top edge is rolled over in a shirttail hem; each side bears applied, cut-loop fringes, and the lower edge is self-fringed. All fringes are natural cotton and dark blue wool.

ProvenanceAccompanying the coverlet is an "Agricultural Diploma" (see 1995.1400.1). It states that, "at an exhibition of the Columbia County Agricultural Society held at Bloomsburg, on Wednesday and Thursday, the 22nd and 23rd of October, 1856 . . . " one William A. Buss was awarded "Second Best" for a "Coverlid." It is still undetermined whether Buss was the weaver of the coverlet or simply someone who entered it in the Fair competition. There is a Bloomsburg in Columbia Co. in Pa.
