DescriptionCentral finial of compressed spherical form with domed and bladed cresting above on a tall post flared and molded at edge of base surmounting double-domed cover with narrow flange at rim and short bezel on underside fitting within rim of body; tall body of narrow or slender proportions with straight inward-tapering sides with raised molding at rim, broad banding above center, and bold fillet above splayed base with recessed moldings on face near edge; cover attached to upper hinge plate with integral thumb piece of conventional chair-back type; five-knuckle hinge on upper face of handle with section of moldings parallel with hinge above a chair-back panel with pendant ball below hinge; conventional broken-scroll handle of D-shaped section with ball terminal attached at rim and with reinforcing disc to lower section of body; uninscribed as to owner.InscribedNone
MarkingsTouch mark "H?I" within a shaped rectangle with pseudo hallmarks on face of body to left of upper handle attachment (Peal MPM 2687). Pseudo hallmarks include a lion passant within a shaped rectangle struck three times in conjunction with touch mark. Secondary mark a quality "X" with crown above over hallmarks.
