DescriptionHigh chair; all elements of walnut except as noted; plain, turned rear posts with single soft ring turning just below arm and mushroom shaped finials above double spool turning; plain, turned front posts with soft, single ring turning just below arm; plain, turned arms tenoned into front and rear posts; two plain, turned stretchers on each of four sides, front two missing (heavily worn nubs of top stretcher remain in mortises); four plain, turned oak seat rails tenoned into posts support woven rush seat; two curved slats with straight bottoms and arched tops tenoned into rear posts, top slat missing (heavily worn stubs of top slat remain in mortises); unused round mortise above top rear stretcher on left rear leg was plugged during initial construction.MarkingsNone found.
ProvenanceChair was purchased by Vera Crawford of Vera's Antiques in 1976 at the sale of the Gresham estate on Canal Drive in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Mrs. Crawford was given to understand that the chair had come from the Gresham ancestral home just off London Bridge Road in the same city. Chair was then sold to source via Lana Wolcott, a Norfolk antique dealer. Origin: Virginia, probably Princess Anne or Norfolk.
