DescriptionThis is a double-woven coverlet, center-seamed, of dark blue wool and white cotton with self-fringed sides and bottom. The interior design consists of medallions composed of four eagles holding banners in their beaks, interspersed with floral designs. The work "LIBERTY" is woven into each banner. There are no separate border patterns or corner blocks.
Label TextThe coverlet design is notable because it omits borders and corner blocks. The medallions are another unusual feature: the fields of mid-nineteenth-century "figured and fancy' coverlets like this one typically feature stylized floral sprays or geometric motifs.
In this instance, four eagles, each with banner proclaiming "LIBERTY," have been cleverly positioned to create an intricate circular repeat on this coverlet.
InscribedThe word "LIBERTY" is woven into each banner streaming from each eagle's beak in the interior of the coverlet.
MarkingsThe word "LIBERTY" is woven into each banner streaming from each eagle's beak in the interior of the coverlet.
