DescriptionSmall ribbed basket with a broad hickory band decorated with cutouts set at the top of the basket below the rim. The solid hickory handle is a continuous circle running beneath the hickory ribs and secured under the basket via the white oak weavers.
Label TextFound at a Presbyterian church rummage sale in Rock Hill, South Carolina, this basket has cutout designs in the band beneath the handle that are most unusual, with no known related examples. After appearing on the Antiques Roadshow in Atlanta, it was sold to Colonial Williamsburg. The handle, rim, ribs, and cutout band beneath the rim are all hickory; the weavers are white oak.
ProvenanceFormer owner Mary Bell Mullis bought this basket at an undocumented date at a rummage sale held at El Bethel Presbyterian Church (located 8 miles below Rock Hill, South Carolina and just across the state line from Charlotte, NC, 20 miles below Charlotte on I-77). No preceding owners have been identified.
