DescriptionThe nearly square coverlet is made from wool and cotton in an overshot weave. The geometric pattern of alternating squares and bars is seen through blue warps and green and red wefts. The coverlet is formed of three panels, seamed vertically along the selvedges. The sides are plain selvedges and the ends are rolled hems. The bottom edge and the sides are edged in applied hairpin crochet fringe and tassels, though the fringe on the upper half of the right side is missing. The fringe alternates between green and red stripes.
Label TextThis coverlet gets its geometric design through an overshot weave. During weaving, the green and red threads are shot over the blue, plain weave fabric, giving the structure its name. The extra threads mean the coverlet is thicker and warmer than it would be otherwise, while also being decorative.
ProvenanceThis coverlet has been in the AARFAC collection for many years but was never accessioned. No information can be found relating to the source, or year of acquisition.
