DescriptionSheffield-plated candle vase with reversable finial/candleholder insert. One of a pair of Sheffield-plated candle vases with four ball-and-claw feet which support a stepped square plinth with beaded decoration. A short baluster stem with gadrooned edges supports an egg-shaped body with overall chased and repousee vine and floral motifs with a symetrical cartouche. The vases have a removable, reversible lid consisting of a pineapple finial on one end and a bluster-shaped candle cup with gadrooned decoration on the other.Label TextThese fused silver plate candle vases probably were made in Sheffield about 1765. A rare and complex form, few candle vases were made in Sheffield plate. They can be used in three ways by reversing or removing their finials: as decorative urns; as candlesticks; or as vases. They are shown here as a candlestick and, with the finial removed, as a vase.
