DescriptionThis is a pincushion covered in silk and adorned with steel pins arranged in a decorative design. The front is covered in a blue and white, floral damask. In arrangement of pins at the center is a basket from which two stalks of foliage and a heart emerge. On either side of the heart is the year, "17/ 64". Two flowers are positioned above the heart. The letters "S + B" appear below the basket. The back is covered with a green and white striped silk. Each corner is adorned with a peach and white silk thread tassel.
Label TextAccording to tradition, this pincushion was made from fabric worn at the coronation of George III. This type of pincushion, also known as a layette pincushion, was often given to celebrate births and weddings. The heart and initials suggest that this pincushion commemorates a wedding.
