DescriptionMan's domed cap of green silk embroidered with couched metallic threads in scrolling and coiling floral pattern. Cuff is similarly embroidered and edged with metallic bobbin lace. Lining of natural-color linen block-printed in red and black in a large-scale floral and scroll pattern.Label TextMen wore caps to cover their shaved heads on occasions when they removed their wigs. Although the silk and metallic thread needlework and lace give this cap great exterior beauty, the hidden block-printed lining is even rarer. Few early printed textiles have survived. This lining undoubtedly survived because the embroidered cap was a treasured keepsake.
