DescriptionThis is a nearly-square whitework sampler featuring white linen stitches on a white linen ground. In the sampler's middle is a motif of a heart surrounded by a diamond-shaped floral pattern and around it is stitched, "A SP 16 64." The sampler features geometric and floral bands on two sides, and the entire work is covered in individual geometric floral designs. Approximately half of the sampler is done in French knots and the other half in satin stitch, creating a diverse visual effect. At each corner is attached scallops of open work.Stitches: French knots, satin stitch, tent stitch.
Label TextThis nearly square sampler, marked with the initials "A S P" and the year 1664, is stitched entirely in whitework, with white stitches on a white linen ground. Working with thread that is the same color as the ground fabric is more difficult than stitching a colorful sampler, so this project was likely completed by a schoolgirl more advance in her needlework education.
