DescriptionThis rectangular, fawn panel has a design of curvilinear, spiky vines and strewn stems of orange and pink carnations and small stems of blue flowers. The brocaded design is echoed by a self-figured design of leafy vines, scallop shapes, and stripes. The sections of the ground away from the brocade are figured with small self-colored daisies. The top and bottom are sewn into twill tape. The left and right edges are selvedges. The selvedge is seven warps wide (1/8”) and held in a plain weave, coarser than the main ground weave, but not corded.Label TextIn the nineteenth century, revival styles abounded. Interior decorators, such as Lenygon & Morant, stocked antique fabric samples, and reproduced or adapted those fabrics for use in their decorating and upholstery.
MarkingsOn front of upper twill tape: “2937” with purple stamp and handwritten in grease pen; “G1972-153,1” in black grease pen.
On reverse: “NOT FOR SALE” stamped twice in purple; “SAMPLE ONLY” stamped in purple; in corners, rectangular purple stamp saying “MORANT & CO./91 NEW BOND ST./LONDON, W.”
ProvenanceThis is one of a large collection of "decorator samples" from the firm of MORANT & COMPANY, obtained by Morant & Co., 91 New Bond Street, London, before 1930. The firm, later known as LENYGON & MORANT, was transferred to New York about 1930.
