DescriptionWoman's cap or coif worked in black silk needlework on natural plain-woven linen ground in an interlacing design of scrolling leaves and thistles. Cap is styled with a peak on the forehead and rounded ears at the cheeks. Cap is made in one piece with a seam at the top of the head and shaping gathers at the back crown. Linen ties run in a casing at the neckline. Needlework stitches include back, detached chain, herringbone, running, single, and stem. No lining. Black needlework is fragile and missing in areas, though the stitch holes still survive.ProvenanceEx Coll Untermyer.
