DescriptionReeded open scroll handle with leaf capping and central shell at top; handle terminating in a cluster of acanthus leaves secures through top of cover with nut and bolt and a set stud; domed cover of oval plan with intermediate band of gadrooning; bezel of cover fitting within rim of body; body of oval plan with flat irregular rim of alternating flutes and gadroons with acanthus leaf and shell overlays at intervals; contracted neck and convex lower section to body; leaf-capped and reeded open handles at either end of body with lion head attachments; body supported on four short legs with elaborate scrolled attachments with leaves and shells and terminating in lion paw feet. Handles, rim and legs made of filled stampings.



InscribedCoat of arms of Hamilton within a rococo cartouche with motto below engraved on either side of body on rubbed in silver insert.

Number “1” engraved on top of cover under handle; crude number “2” scratched on underside of cover handle.

MarkingsSunburst mark twice on underside of cover and on underside of rim of body. Secondary mark (possible workman’s mark) of incuse asterisk form with sunburst marks on underside of rim.
