DescriptionSauceboat: Ovoid body with broad upward-curving open spout and applied gadrooned rim; high standing cast double-scroll handle with leaf grip, pendant series of graduated scales, and scrolled terminal; upper end of handle of shell form soldered to inside of rim; lower join of handle above terminal with disc attachment to body; body supported on three short cast C-scroll legs with shell attachments to body and shell feet. Engraved coat of ams on face of side of body. (Unidentified)
Label TextSauceboats supported on short legs first appear in the mid-1720s, increase in number during the 1730s, and are quite plentiful between 1740 and 1780. Early ones are usually supported on four legs, three being customary after 1740. After that date they vary greatly as to weight and quality. This substantial set with cast and applied gadrooned rims and well-articulated handles and feet are good examples of a conventional mid-century type.
InscribedUnidentified arms engraved on face of each body.
MarkingsMaker's mark "WG" in script letters within a shaped reserve, leopard's head crowned, lion passant, and date letter on underside of body of each.
