DescriptionSaucer with warm-gray glaze over white body with overglaze enamel decoration en grisaille with gilt and select applications of iron oxide. With traditional, so-called symbols of "Amorous Trophies," including an altar with two vases, two birds perched on cupid's quiver, in a pastoral landscape. With border composed of intertwined shells and arabesques. Gently flaring body from pronounced unglazed foot ring. Rather wide base.
Label TextThis Chinese export porcelain saucer is decorated with ink color enamels in the Valentine pattern. The western symbolism includes two doves, cupid's quiver, and altar with eternal flame. The monochrome design allowed the gilding to stand out while a touch of colored enamels drew the tea drinker's eye to the paired doves.
