DescriptionOval basket with oval foot composed of open cast scrolls and flourishes supporting oval body with solid center and sides formed of alternating bands of pierced diaperwork and quatrefoils with asterisks, separated by narrow curving borders of relief-chased dots; cast scalloped edge of gadrooning and shells. Bail handle with cast lower terminals and pierced straps flanking an unengraved rectangular reserve at center. Bottom center of basket with engraved rococo cartouche of scrolls, shells, and foliage; engraved arms within cartouche have been erased.MarkingsMarked in relief on exterior side of basket: 1) “W•P” in rounded rectangle with divots on either side and on bottom [Grimwade 1990 # 3255]; lion passant; 3) leopard’s head crowned; and 4) very faint edge of date letter, possibly a Gothic “M” for 1767-68
