DescriptionWoman's cap of fine white cotton embroidered with knots spaced at even intervals to form dots. A flat shaped band surrounds the face and continues at lower back of head. Oval crown is gathered and stitched to the shaped band. A gathered band is inset into the shaped band, possibly positioned at the forehead when worn.
ProvenanceAccording to tradition, the cap was worn by Catharine Brooke Francesco (1762-1821), wife of Peter Francesco (1760-1831). She was the daughter of Robert and Mary Fauntleroy Brooke of "Brooke Bank" or "Brookesby" (Essex County, Virginia).
