DescriptionWoman's gown or dress of printed cotton in dark brown ground with trailing flowers and leaves in reds, blue, lavender, yellow and green. High rounded neckline, opening down center front. Very full puffed sleeves, tapering to narrow wrists. Drop-front skirt, fastening at back with ties. Attached belt. Skirt is full and gathered. No hem facing. Photographed with white cotton pelerine collar.Label TextDress styles of the early to mid-1830s had a very wide puffed sleeve, often supported by padded props sewn in place or worn around the upper arm. By the end of the decade, the sleeves' fullness was squeezed down from the top of the shoulder, as if the massive bulk of the fabric was deflating. Increasingly inexpensive roller-printed cottons like this became a popular form of women's and girls' dresses.
