DescriptionPetticoat from an infant's christening gown of cream silk satin. The petticoat is pleated to silk tape waistline, opening at center back; the front of the skirt is trimmed with meandering ruched silk ribbon applied to the satin ground.
Label TextThis petticoat is part of a two-piece christening gown worn by a little boy in 1763. A paper tag sewn to the matching coverlet reads "Chrisom date 1763/ Belonged to Dr Barnard/ Provost of Eton College..." The gown must have been worn by Dr. Edward Barnard's son, Edward, who was born in 1763. The child's father, Dr. Edward Barnard, was born in 1717, and married Susanna Haggett of Barbados in 1760. They had one son.
ProvenanceFrom the collection of Cora Ginsburg. A paper tag sewn to the matching coverlet/chrisom reads "Chrisom date 1763/ Belonged to Dr Barnard/ Provost of Eton College/ Lent by Wm (?) Cruickshank." The gown must have been worn by Dr. Edward Barnard's son, Edward, who was born in 1763. The child's father, Dr. Edward Barnard, was born in 1717, and married Susanna Haggett of Barbados in 1760. They had one son.
