DescriptionThis rectangular needlework picture is worked in shades of red, green, blue, purple, brown, beige, gray, and white silk and wool embroidery threads on a linen ground. The picture is a still life and features a large floral bouquet in a basket on a table with a blue table cloth. The table appears to be floating in space and is out of proportion with the flowers. A leaf and a bud have fallen from the bouquet onto the table. The bouquet is framed by lavender drapes with braided ties. The colors of the flowers include pink, red, maroon, lavender, white, gray, blue, and beige, with green stems and leaves. The background is medium brown.

Stitches: chain, couched, encroaching satin, satin
Label TextThe floral still life appears as a subject for needlework pictures as early as the seventeenth century, however it became especially popular during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The popularity of this subject matter is apparent in other mediums, most notably theorem paintings, that were worked by girls and young women during this time.
