DescriptionOne of a pair of black painted Windsor side chairs with rectangular crest rail, decorated with stenciled flowers and leaves, between two rounded stiles with flattened fronts, starting one quarter of way up from seat, outlined and painted with feather and star motif; four rounded and tapered banisters; plank seat with rounded front and rear corners, outlined around front, sides, and in front of banisters; bamboo-style turned legs, rounded side, rear and front stretchers.
Label TextChairs featuring spindles, plank seats, chamfered rear stiles, and rectangular crests with freehand and/or stenciled decoration were mass produced in several parts of the Northeast. Customers could buy chairs singly or in large sets, which was encouraged by their low cost.
Inscribed"18" is written in contemporary script in pencil on the seat bottom of no, 72.2000.6,2.
